BUCS Big Wednesday

Wednesday March 16th saw BUCS visit Sheffield Hallam University for the culmination of the university team sports programme.

With 50 matches hosted over 4 different sites, Code Delta broadcast 14 live to the internet and over 10,000 viewers. Working in conjunction with volunteers from Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield College, 34 hours of live coverage was produced.

A Big Challenge

From the start, this was going to be a big event. The widespread nature of the event programme required four full broadcast set ups, and timing only allowed for a limited amount of access before the day of the event.

With the support of the Sheffield Hallam University Creative Media Centre a large amount of equipment, including cameras, vision mixers, sound desks, microphones and monitors was borrowed, all to be used by students from the University.

Hallam Sports Park

Operating from the back of a van, 3 cameras were using in the filming of the Women’s and Men’s Championship Football matches. The nature of this site meant we were restricted to only covering two matches, and relying on over 100m of bright yellow ethernet cable to keep us on air.

English Institute of Sport

EIS is one of our regular haunts for Varsity matches, and this time we were here to cover four Volleyball matches. This time though we brought six cameras, including a wireless at the side of the court, and for a robotic camera high above the net.

Ponds Forge

Ponds Forge was home to our Basketball coverage, our cameras were used in the coverage here.

Abbeydale Sports Club

The final site was the setting for the Hockey matches, played on the former London 2012 Olympic pitch which was relocated here. With a lack of access and an exposed outdoor location, we only had two cameras here, and had to rely on a 4G signal for our broadcast signal.

Bits & Bobs

As well as the actual broadcasts themselves, we had to produce a range of additional materials for those broadcasts, including titles, credits, a customised graphics package and playout website.
